Discard: A Phase In The Narcissistic Abuse Cycle

The discard phase is the final phase of the narcissistic abuse cycle. In this phase the narcissist gets rid of their victim because the victim is no longer of use to them. The victim, who was once valuable narcissistic supply for the narcissist, is no longer of value. Instead, the victim has become bore to the narcissist because the victim no longer has the ability to refill the supply that the narcissist demands. The victim has simply run out of what the narcissist believes is needed from the victim. It is during the discard phase that the victim is replaced with a new supply (someone else).

The discard phase is exactly what it means. The narcissist has no more use for the victim and discards the victim like trash. If this sounds cruel and callous, it is because this is exactly how it is with the narcissist. It is during the discard phase that the narcissist displays cruelty of the worst kind. The nice narcissist from the idealize phase is now gone. The narcissist now reacts with contempt and does whatever is necessary to force the victim to accept under no uncertain terms that the relationship between the victim and the narcissist is over.

There is no salvaging the relationship. There are only great attempts by the narcissist to invalidate the victim and place blame on the victim for the demise of the relationship. No amount of pleading or bargaining by the victim is going to change the narcissist’s decision not to walk away from the relationship. The narcissist will simply discard the victim without empathy or sympathy for the victim’s feelings. This narcissistic discard may be temporary or permanent, but it is a discard in every sense because the victim will feel abandoned, cast aside, and rejected by the narcissist.
