Church Tales of Narcissistic Abuse: Monopoly On Your Time

Monopoly On Your Time

Just like individual narcissists like to monopolize and control your time, a narcissistically empowered church will do the same. Narcissistic pastors and church leaders love controlling and manipulating time from their members. This can be seen in long and lengthy church services of all types, both planned and unplanned events, and all sorts of meetings that can occur any time of day and any time of the week.

There is very little regard for the time that members need outside of church for their personal lives or even jobs. The expectation from these toxic churches is that members will devote their time to the church including any extra time. Narcissistically empowered churches believe they have earned a monopoly on members’ time simply because these members decided to become a part of the church.

Despite members devoting themselves to God or the cause of Christ, these toxic churches make themselves gods over their members. They expect that the time members serve will be done so in honor of the church. In like manner, narcissistic pastors and church leaders view membership devotion as time given to them and their causes even though they slap a label on membership efforts and call it whatever they like.

Checking your watch in these types of churches might put you in the spotlight for being called out by leadership. They believe there is no more important time than giving time to the church under the guise of giving your time to God. Yet, this façade of their so-called belief system could not be further from the truth. It is actually your time that is controlled and manipulated so that you conform to the whims and desires of those in leadership. In narcissistically empowered churches, your time is never about God. Your time is about narcissists and other toxic personalities, and they want your time to belong to them.
